Why a toddler suddenly refuses food they loved last week
It looks like fussiness. It is usually a normal phase with a name, and it passes. What is going on, and what makes mealtimes easier while you wait.
Draft. Replace this with your own writing before publishing.
A toddler who ate everything at one suddenly wants only three foods, all of them beige. Nothing has gone wrong. Somewhere between eighteen months and three years most children become cautious about unfamiliar food.
Why it happens
Growth slows down after the first year, so appetite genuinely drops. At the same time a toddler is discovering that saying no is a thing they can do, and food is one of the few areas where the answer is entirely theirs.
What tends to help
- Serving a small amount of something new beside something familiar
- Letting them touch, smell and put food back down without comment
- Keeping your own reaction flat, either way
If a child is losing weight, gagging often, or the list of accepted foods keeps shrinking, that is worth raising with your pediatrician rather than waiting out.
